Ce sera le Palais de l’Image, regroupant la FEMIS, la Cinémathèque française, le Centre national de la Photographie et la Mission du patrimoine photographique. Si la période est propice – gauche au gouvernement, patrimonialisation du cinéma, Grands Projets – les obstacles administratifs, tensions politiques et rivalités institutionnelles mènent finalement à l’arrêt du projet en 1998. La nouvelle Maison de l’Image, réduite à la Cinémathèque, s’installe dans le 13e arrondissement et le palais de Tokyo accueille un nouveau projet consacré à l’art contemporain. In 1984, Jack Lang, who was then the French Minister of Culture, set in motion a new project: the opening, in the former National Museum of Modern Art or Palais de Tokyo, of a new Centre for moving and non-moving images. This future “Palais de l’Image” was supposed to gather a film school, the French Cinémathèque and two different associations dedicated to photography. If the decade favoured these kinds of projects – a Left government, a process of giving the official status of heritage to cinema, Jack Lang’s Great Projects – administrative obstacles, political tensions and institutional rivalries lead to the end of the project in 1998.
