Cette image déploie trois opérateurs visuels que sont les pieds du Christ qui dépassent la bordure alors qu’il est en cours d’élévation, ses empreintes-relique sur le mont des Oliviers et, enfin, la plante du pied de l’apôtre agenouillé dos au spectateur, au premier plan de l’image. De cette manière, le dispositif iconographique de la triple figuration du pied, très régulier dans les images d’Ascension à partir du XVe siècle, propose au spectateur une puissante pensée figurative à propos de l’absence, de la trace et de la permanence. In 1490, Hans Memling painted the Ascension of Christ on the right-hand side panel of a triptych now in the Louvre depicting the Resurrection in the centre, and the Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian on the left-hand side panel. This image uses three visual operators : Christ’s feet protruding from the border as he is being elevated, his footprints-relics on the Mount of Olives and, finally, the sole of the foot of the kneeling apostle with his back to the viewer, in the foreground of the image.In this way, the iconographic device of the triple figuration of the foot, very regular in Ascension images from the 15th century onwards, offers the viewer a powerful figurative thought about absence, trace and permanence.
