It shows that, even at the origins of Italian sexual science, the scientific and pornographic dimensions were deeply intertwined. Firstly, by dealing with the strong ambiguity that characterizes Mantegazza’s work, it discusses the debate surrounding the publication of the book, paying particular attention to the correspondence between Mantegazza and his publisher, Emilio Treves, and the reactions of public opinion. Subsequently, by analysing Mantegazza’s erotic library, it shows that his books share similar discourses and language with the most popular pornographic literature of the time. Finally, the article analyses Mantegazza’s conscious exploitation of this “fluid milieu” of genres to better disseminate his sexual science and reflects on the blurred boundaries that existed at the time between sexual science, anthropology and pornography. En se concentrant sur la publication du livre Gli amori degli uomini (1886-1887) de Paolo Mantegazza, cet article vise à étudier les connexions entre la science sexuelle, l’anthropologie et la pornographie dans la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle italien. Il montre que, même aux origines de la science sexuelle italienne, les dimensions scientifique et pornographique étaient profondément imbriquées. Dans un premier temps, en traitant de la forte ambiguïté qui caractérise l’œuvre de Mantegazza, il est question du débat autour de la publication du livre, le tout en accordant une attention particulière à la correspondance entre Mantegazza et son éditeur, Emilio Treves, et aux réactions de l’opinion publique. Par la suite, en analysant la bibliothèque érotique de Mantegazza, force est de constater que ses livres partagent des discours et des langages similaires avec la littérature pornographique la plus populaire de l’époque.
