Mycelium Garden

This project, developed under the « Symbiosis » call for research projects by EUR ArTec, aims to explore the unique characteristics of a mycelium network in a human interaction mode focused on listening. We describe the construction of setups that facilitate sensitive interactions with the mycelium, an organism that supports symbiosis, by interpreting its electrical signals in interaction with our human music world. To establish this interaction, we adopted a methodology seeking « objective knowledge » (Popper, 1985). Our experimental approach aimed to foster a relationship with this non-human organism, observing its behavior and adapting our own in a collaborative human/AI/mycelium process. We contemplated the protocols needed to access mycelium signals and how to create assemblies to make this interaction both audible and perceptible. This project delves into and challenges the interfaces and transductions involved in interspecies interaction initiatives. Moreover, the installation highlights the significance of acknowledging the distinctiveness of non-human entities and the necessity of developing research protocols that adhere to a principle of « verisimilitude » in our ecological attentiveness to living beings.

This article outlines the methodologies and findings from the user studies of the BBDMI project, investigating new interactions with real-time sound through EMG signals from sensors on performers. The protocols, encountered challenges, and best practices are discussed. The paper also delves into the adaptation of two mixed pieces using EMG signals for control, highlighting the advantages and challenges of this approach in musical composition and performance.
