Based on an ethnographic fieldwork lead in France, French-speaking Switzerland and India, with practitioners and yoga teachers, this article proposes to understand the specificities of learning breathing techniques and the conceptions of the body and the breath resulting of this learning process. It is about whether prāṇa can be understood as a material culture. The Sanskrit concept of prāṇa refers to two meanings: a “vital force” or “breath or air”, but today is also understood as an “energy”. The person leans, through techniques, to control it. Yet, conversely, through its physiological and possibly symbolic, and even spiritual action, the prāṇa acts on the body conception. With the awareness of the breath, it participates also to the emergence of a holistic conception of the body. How does learning breathing techniques lead subjects to change their relationship with the body, or even with their environment?

The purpose of this article is to study the bodies in vocational training in art crafts. Based on observations and interviews conducted with craftsmen, supplemented by an experimental device that "makes mimic" the gestures of the trade, the research proposes to observe the bodies in training in order to identify the bodily elements contained in a situation of craft transmission and to question the issues of professional socialization. This cross-referenced data highlights the relationship between arts and crafts training encountered, between the transmission of technical gestures and the physical modelling of the body in the arts and crafts training courses encountered. Particular attention is paid to the role of the trainer, which is not limited to the transmission of know-how but extends to the formation of a body capable of integrating the group of craftsmen.

Starting from the notion of living, the sememic core of the word ethnoscenology, the article considers the conditions of its necessary examination in the study of the aesthetics of symbiotic performances. These constitute the emergent manifestations of the incarnations of the imaginary in the various societies. The new multidisciplinary perspectives in the field of the anthropology of aesthetics (Laplantine, 2021), of deep ecology (Arne Naess, Felix Guattari), of biology and of live performance suggest that these practices participate in the economy of the biosphere of which humans are a symbiont. The identification of the universal bio-cognitive foundations of the diversity of organized human spectacular forms reinforces the fundamental role of learning, which has been highlighted in particular in relation to the "techniques of the body" (M. Mauss 1934), the acquisition of language in a given ecosystem (Lenneberg, 1967; Chomsky, 1975) and social determinations. The multidisciplinary exploration of the question of the living (bios, E. Barba 1979) can contribute to the establishment of a coherent training program for students and researchers in ethnoscenology.

In this article, I intend to establish a link between communities of martial art practices and theatrical communities. In martial arts, the body is requested to believe: the body-mind unity concept, the capacity to forge a link between the self and the universe through practicing, and elements of the Asian ways of thinking. This fact generates within the group a common orthopraxy that is necessary both for an individual evolution and the community functioning. In theatrical communities, shared body practices are the basis for the will to change the actor/tress. When the stage director chooses one martial art practice, it generates within the theatrical community specific features. To define them I will compare three examples: the U-Theatre in Taiwan, Anatoly Vasiliev's way, and Armand Gatti's theatre. The article concludes by demonstrating that these practices produce common sharing and thus create a commonness based on a collective believing body.

In 2018, during the Brazilian presidential campaign, the #elenão and #elesim movements performed, on the streets and on social networks, political and social demands from two diverse groups of women. These movements have not used new performance strategies, but they found unprecedented visibility. During these events, the female body was sometimes a vehicle and subject of protestation, in addition of being used as a firearm, collaborating with the agency of the electoral narratives of each group. What did these performing bodies express and what models of women were defended in the public sphere of the networks and the streets? These questions will be analysed by trying to understand the performatif territory in an enlarged way, impossible to be separated from the virtual instance and from a plateformative logic.

The question of corporal engagements of Muslim women from Brussels, Beirut, and Montreal is dealt with in this text. It focuses on certain religious practices of Muslim women, and the consequences of these corporal engagements that can, sometimes, create a negative "imaginary." The consequences of this negative imaginary will be discussed. The subject will be underlined by an analysis of ethnographic field data from our ongoing doctoral research project. Our research explores the subjective experiences and perspectives of Muslim women from Brussels, Beirut, and Montreal, from the Sunni, Shia, and Sufi branches of Islam, regarding the violent radicalization linked to the rise of the Islamic State in 2011.

This paper aims at outlining a wide-scale sketch of the geographic and cross-cultural expansion of expansion of ascetic techniques from Asian origin, those that fall under the all-embracing categories of yoga and meditation. These two words are allocated a wide range of meanings to be understood in terms of forms they assume and transformations they are subjected to. This paper explores the causes and processes of the diffusion of yoga and meditation, as well as the conditions of reception of these practices, in the West and at a world-wide scale. A particular attention is paid to the issue of “the East” and its imaginary form, Orientalism, as agents of diffusions and of transformation of yoga and meditation in the West. It also questions the role of the Body as site for modern spiritual experience, as tool for the expression of new relationships between the Self and the Other, torn between a libertarian pole, which is embodied in the figure of the “truth seeker” or “spiritual consumer”, and a normative pole, which is assuming the reverse form of a highly institutionalized and community framework, in which individual bodies are under constraint. In between these two poles, is emerging the ambiguous contemporary relationship to the Self and the Body when they touch upon ascetic techniques that are promises of emancipation and well-being, but as well suspected of sectarianism.

In this article we wonder about the specific relationships that Indian civilization has developed with food. Starting from the Vedic texts, where food is thought of as the equivalent of the Absolute (annabrahman) and the essence of the corporeity (annamayakosha), we turn to Indian reflection on the theater and to a philosophical school which has made the notion of taste (rasa) the keystone of aesthetic reflection. Based on these, we propose a « yoga of food » that lays the foundation for a more direct and poetic relationship with food, more conscious and joyful, in order to restore the ancient value of the act of eating, and thus moving towards a more resilient and sustainable type of consumption.
