Dans ses deux œuvres consacrées à l’esthétique, il met en évidence le rôle fondamental de la saveur de l’apaisement, śāntarasa, comme instance médiatrice entre l’expérience en art et l’état suprême de libération. Ainsi l’éveillé au cœur sensible (sahṛdaya), bien que détaché du monde, peut-il goûter les saveurs émanées d’œuvres d’art et les savourer comme autant d’expressions de la Conscience créatrice de Shiva. L’émerveillement (camatkāra) contribue à centrer le sujet dans la dimension du je suis, tout en suscitant une expansion de conscience, seuil vers la libération. The conception of art in ancient India places in the foreground the experience of the conscious subject, as evidenced by Abhinavagupta (10th-11th century), a philosopher of the non-dualistic Kashmir Shaivism. In his two works dedicated to aesthetics, he highlights the fundamental role of the flavour of appeasement, śāntarasa, as mediating instance between art experience and the supreme state of liberation. Thus the awakened, endowed with a sensitive heart (sahṛdaya), though detached from the world, can taste the flavours emanating from works of art and savour them as expressions of Shiva’s creative Consciousness. The wonder helps to centre the subject inwardly in the dimension of the ‘I am’, while arousing an expansion of consciousness, threshold towards liberation.
