Nécessitent-ils quelques explications ? “Body”, “new religions”, “sectarian aberration” are the three notions of the title of this special issue…

Sport-health has become an object of medical belief, a belief by effects, since the proof of the therapeutic effectiveness of physical activity was provided by physiological measurement but also by the psycho-social benefits on feeling of well-being and self-esteem. A biopolitical shift has occurred through the shift from recommended physical activity to the prescription sport prescription. The healthy body has become the new religion in the face of the Covid-19 contagion.

This article is the first step in a study on the interference of perceptual biases and vogue words in judging performing arts. The importance of the national context in the evaluation of sectarianization becomes clear when we consider the evolution of the term sect in French, especially from the second half of the 19th century. Diachronic analysis of the lexical field shows the return effect of the adjectivization in a negative sense on the notion itself. The case study examines the attribution process of the word sectarian to the Odin Teatret founded by Eugenio Barba in Oslo in 1964. It highlights the influence of religious heritage in the discourse. Eugenio Barba's constant concern to avoid the sanctuarisation of his writings and practices seems to respond to this criticism of the Odin that was once formulated and maintained by some commentators.

The question of corporal engagements of Muslim women from Brussels, Beirut, and Montreal is dealt with in this text. It focuses on certain religious practices of Muslim women, and the consequences of these corporal engagements that can, sometimes, create a negative "imaginary." The consequences of this negative imaginary will be discussed. The subject will be underlined by an analysis of ethnographic field data from our ongoing doctoral research project. Our research explores the subjective experiences and perspectives of Muslim women from Brussels, Beirut, and Montreal, from the Sunni, Shia, and Sufi branches of Islam, regarding the violent radicalization linked to the rise of the Islamic State in 2011.

This paper aims at outlining a wide-scale sketch of the geographic and cross-cultural expansion of expansion of ascetic techniques from Asian origin, those that fall under the all-embracing categories of yoga and meditation. These two words are allocated a wide range of meanings to be understood in terms of forms they assume and transformations they are subjected to. This paper explores the causes and processes of the diffusion of yoga and meditation, as well as the conditions of reception of these practices, in the West and at a world-wide scale. A particular attention is paid to the issue of “the East” and its imaginary form, Orientalism, as agents of diffusions and of transformation of yoga and meditation in the West. It also questions the role of the Body as site for modern spiritual experience, as tool for the expression of new relationships between the Self and the Other, torn between a libertarian pole, which is embodied in the figure of the “truth seeker” or “spiritual consumer”, and a normative pole, which is assuming the reverse form of a highly institutionalized and community framework, in which individual bodies are under constraint. In between these two poles, is emerging the ambiguous contemporary relationship to the Self and the Body when they touch upon ascetic techniques that are promises of emancipation and well-being, but as well suspected of sectarianism.

In 2018, during the Brazilian presidential campaign, the #elenão and #elesim movements performed, on the streets and on social networks, political and social demands from two diverse groups of women. These movements have not used new performance strategies, but they found unprecedented visibility. During these events, the female body was sometimes a vehicle and subject of protestation, in addition of being used as a firearm, collaborating with the agency of the electoral narratives of each group. What did these performing bodies express and what models of women were defended in the public sphere of the networks and the streets? These questions will be analysed by trying to understand the performatif territory in an enlarged way, impossible to be separated from the virtual instance and from a plateformative logic.

This article looks at a documentary art piece that incorporates prayer rugs and interviews with Muslims from Belgium, France and Morocco. Through the work, the paradox of the prayer rug becomes apparent. When observed through its basic function alone, as an object used to perform prosternations, it appears commonplace, even disposable. But it is this very same function that renders each prayer rug unique, irreplaceable. This apparently ordinary object is the key to an invisible and intimate space. It is described as allowing the person praying to leave their everyday surroundings for real or imagined sacred places and is spoken of as a powerful means of connecting with others who are praying at the same time and to the prayers that have been said and are yet to be said on the very same prayer rug. Others describe their prayer rug as allowing them to connect with an intimate part of themselves. The piece has been presented as a performance and also as an installation work which displays the prayer rugs alongside audio clips from interviews with their owners.

Configurations du Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards

The difficulty of access to the work sessions of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards, Pontedera's geographic isolation, the rarity of contacts with the public, the demanding commitment asked to the program's participants and the request of a deep work on human beings are the misunderstandings that led to the sectarian label placed upon the Workcenter. This study proposes a detailed analysis of the elements that pushed towards this interpretation. My paper maintains that the “sectarian configuration” – of which Grotowski’s heirs have been blamed since 1983 – would mainly concern the protection of an artistic research that has been revolutionary for twentieth century drama.

Through an ethnographic analysis using participant observation and interviews, and leaning on the example of Sivananda ashram, this article questions the conditions of handover between guru and disciple, highlighting on some yoga practices. Facing the same bodily practices, the ways of commitment and believes can be different. How do yoga practitioners read into them? As an introspection, an initiation or the crossing of a boundary between a desire to take time for oneself and a submission-agreement? These data will allow to discuss around the question of the boundary and the switch between marginal practices and sectarian drift.

This article is based on an ethnographic study, initiated in January 2017, within a transnational spiritual network called the Rainbow Family. Based on empirical data collected from my fieldwork, immersed in Belgian, French and European gatherings of the network, I propose to analyze the characteristics of the sensory and relational experience of the Rainbow gatherings, with a particular focus on its ambivalence. The body is the raw material of a permanent work on oneself of spiritual liberation but it is also, simultaneously, the concrete manifestation of this work. There is a way of being liberated in conformity. Rainbow corporeity oscillates between a libertarian ideal and the reality of a normativity, induced by the community, which is manifested in the standardization of practices but also in behaviors and discourses considered legitimate.

In this article, I discuss the concept of belief as it has been mobilized by the French public authorities since the early 2000s, in the face of the globalization of ritual practices of shamanic inspiration mobilizing the use of hallucinogens. Based on ethnographic survey conducted in the Peruvian Amazon and in Europe and an anthropological approach to the believing subject, I explore here the nature of the belief generated by the hallucinogenic experience. Far from the model of the "mind control" mobilised by the French public authorities, the latter appears to be highly dynamic. Supported by the properties of the hallucinogenic experience, belief also appears to be woven with doubt and reflexive ambivalence, ultimately depending on the social interactions in which the believing subject is involved as well as the benefits he hopes to derive from the practices he engages in.

In this article, I intend to establish a link between communities of martial art practices and theatrical communities. In martial arts, the body is requested to believe: the body-mind unity concept, the capacity to forge a link between the self and the universe through practicing, and elements of the Asian ways of thinking. This fact generates within the group a common orthopraxy that is necessary both for an individual evolution and the community functioning. In theatrical communities, shared body practices are the basis for the will to change the actor/tress. When the stage director chooses one martial art practice, it generates within the theatrical community specific features. To define them I will compare three examples: the U-Theatre in Taiwan, Anatoly Vasiliev's way, and Armand Gatti's theatre. The article concludes by demonstrating that these practices produce common sharing and thus create a commonness based on a collective believing body.

In Japan, the industry of emotional commodities provides video game users or manga readers with attractive and charming creatures as tools to fill their heart and fulfill their fantasies. It is significant that these characters – kyara – are being developed on a rapidly expanding scale which mirrors the economic crisis. They mainly target the market of men and women who refer to themselves as otakus, i.e. consumers of "2D" partners. Held accountable for the low birth rate, otakus engage in fictitious romance or sex relationships as a means to construct their identity and to express a feeling of inadequacy with social expectations: a lot of them believe that it has become impossible, or pointless, to create a family. Is this why they are involved in romantic/sexual relationships with media mix characters? What is the meaning of this "preference" given to imaginary beings? By examining the way otakus build their discourses and adjust them to current events, my goal is to question the very notion of "radicality" in the context of a subculture that is extremely revealing of the tensions pervading contemporary Japanese society.

Our brother Satan

The article explores the hypothesis of a direct relationship between phallocentric radicalism and sexual violence against women (Robin Morgan). Without underestimating the multi-factor analysis of the aggressive phenomenon, the focus is on the erotic deficit at the origin of acts of violence in ideological conflicts. Eroticism is considered here as an esthesiological and cognitive fulfillment of the sexual, biological dynamics (Merleau-Ponty). The sexual instinctual investment in art and its return effect in the development of the Ego facilitate the opening to otherness. A review of the literature on the psychology of radicalization and terrorism highlights the problems encountered in investigating, particularly with regard to the sexuality of the subjects. If it turns out that deradicalization is the result of particular techniques, it is important to consider the field of prevention beforehand, in particular through artistic mediation works.

Modern Yiddish theatre emerges at the end of the 19th century in Central and Eastern Europe and reaches its height during the interwar period. Brought to Western audiences by traveling theatre companies, it reflects the traditional life and customs of Jewish communities scattered throughout an imaginary Yiddishland, evoking the nostalgia of a culture left behind by forced migration. Despite this fairly late onset of a professional Yiddish theatre, Jews seem to possess a natural instinct for performing, including the representation of their own identity. This article, based on doctoral research in progress, seeks to distinguish between “natural instinct” and “acquired” competence in the embodiment of Jewishness – Yiddishkeyt – and to elucidate Jewish ethnicity through the ethnoscenological lens of embodied imaginaries.

Through the life stories itineraries followed by some yoga practitioners, the passionate, this article aims to understand these stories as new forms of self-care in the Foucauldian sense. While yoga is getting popular and its practice is often linked to the well-being, it can also take mundane forms of asceticism, that are similar in some aspects to sport or religious asceticism. After having replaced the passionate among the other yoga practitioners, this article will focus on the actions of self-care that the passionate apply on themselves. Through this self-care, passionate people build new forms of self-improvement that can have a spiritual purpose or a health focus.
