      <link>https://revues.mshparisnord.fr/ethnographie/index.php?id=1661</link>
In 1935, the publication of a list of twenty-seven laughters in Peking opera by Qi Rushan (1876-1962), a theorician and playwright, led to a misunderstanding in the West, suggesting that there is a precise number of ways of laughing in chinese sung theater. A field study with actors in Beijing showed that it is not the case and that, despite the existence of certain patterns, techniques are flexible. The publication of this list is intended for promotional purposes in the West, presenting a precisely structured and scientific theatrical style, as a time when the young Chinese republic is attempting, through the qualities of its culture, to enhance its standing on the international stage. This article will also present recent academic debates in China surrounding the figure of Qi Rushan. </description>
