Based on the example of the sound and light show De Terre et de Feu… en Hainaut performed every summer in Denain (North of France) since 2012, this article analyzes the way in which a historical show established in a socially and economically devastated municipality with a weak tourist attraction can be a vector of cultural revitalization and reconciliation between a population and the unknown history of its town. This local event brings together hundreds of amateur participants and spectators each year around the revaluation of a tangible and intangible cultural heritage and the claim of participation in “great history”. The article considers the performance both aesthetically and sociologically.

Anthropologists dealing with intangible cultural heritage (ICH) must increasingly navigate between territorial expertise and critical analysis. Thus, they are caught in a double constraint often identified with an opposition between “applied” research and “fundamental” research. Their understanding of ICH must therefore be very flexible. On the field, they must train communities in the use of anthropological tools and in self-criticism. In collaboration with the institutions in charge of promoting ICH, they must show how their discipline will be useful to cultural policies. Discussing their findings with their colleagues, they must make them understand the specificities of the field studied. Empirical material related to the case of the processional giants and dragons of Western Europe (France, Belgium) will be used here to feed our demonstration.
