<title>Déclinaisons synesthésiques.
      <link>https://revues.mshparisnord.fr/ethnographie/index.php?id=1200</link>
A fascinating debate about synaesthesia concerns its permeability to cultural learning. The terms of the debate were set out by David Howes’article 'Cultural Synaesthesia' in 2011. Opposing two conceptions or visions of synaesthesia as congenital 'wiring' (neuropsychological approach) and as cultural 'coding' (anthropological approach), the anthropologist makes the strong proposal to consider all synaesthesia as belonging to the latter. In this brief commentary, I point out three difficulties in this radical positioning: the exclusion of synaesthetic idiosyncrasies of genetic/brain origin; the potential reduction under the same name of phenomena and processes that would benefit from being distinguished; the occultation of the synaesthetic diversity encountered within the same culture. My proposal is to consider the 'constitutional' and 'cultural' approaches not as two views of synaesthesia, but as two dimensions of the same phenomenon. I suggest a processual approach to forms and modalities of sensory integration based on the encounter between individual dispositions and the composition and arrangement of sensory environments, i.e. how to think, in situ, about the power of practices to produce and stabilize synesthetic forms in the individuals who engage in them? </description>
