At a time when over half the population of the world are living in towns, urban space has assuredly become a strategic political issue. Any attempt at modifying that space evolves into a catalyzing prompter of political tensions latent in the public sphere. If political struggles can eventually turn rough, they take in everyday life the softer form of conflicting visions. The present study is specifically concerned with the performing power of images, the manner they get into the public debate. This analysis is based upon three case studies cohering around one common leading theme, that is, the featuring of man in contemporary urban space. From anonymous silhouettes to singled out characters, their representations can be perceived as confronting institutional negation with artistic assertion. Analysing them allows us to discern how images, through their material investment of space, are embodied announcers of the social and political dimension of urban space.

The link between the artistic practice and a certain kind of commitment has always been present into hip-hop. It is also at the heart of the debates about the authenticity of the hip-hop practice and especially on its relationships with its merchandizing and the dominant culture. In Brazil, more precisely in the Northeastern region, hip-hop shows a militant dimension committed to the resolution of the problems encountered by the inhabitants of the so-called peripheries and favelas. Through an ethnographical narrative, this paper aims to explore the territorial and political dimensions of the hip-hop culture in Fortaleza (Ceará) and demonstrate how a musical practice can be a powerful tool for the rise of critical consciousness, action and emancipation.
