The concepts of field and fieldwork lies at the very heart of social sciences, particularly in anthropology. The rhetoric which surrounds these concepts prevented the establishment of a fertile dialogue with psychoanalysis. To push boundaries, we study how these concepts were mobilized in other disciplines (art of warfare, medicine, linguistics, etc.). We explore here the statute of field, play-ground and court in the sphere of sports. This study is based on an ethnographic investigation, carried out during two years, about the organization of major international sporting events, We restore the body practices, the actual experiences, and the representations which underlie the labour of the people striving to improve and maintain the courts at Roland-Garros stadium, where the prestigious tennis tournament of the Grand Slam on clay, takes place each year. Prolonging a debate with the work of Claude Lévi-Strauss and his meaningful references to geology, we re-examine the relationship between history and structure. At the same time, we decipher the libidinal cathexis of the field by the actors and the investigator.

Historically, psychoanalysis and anthropology are disciplines that present relevant divergences although they have some themes in common. It is known that Lévi- Strauss has used the Freudian unconscious in his formulation about the symbolic system and Lacan, in turn, has appropriated the anthropological structuralism in a very specific way. According to the psychoanalytic point of view, what would be the differences and similarities in the conception of these authors about the notion of subject and structure? Could the Lacanian topology provide a link between these disciplines? By presenting the constitution of the subject, it is proposed that the conceptual convergences refer to the symbolic field and that the differences stem from the Lacanian understanding that the negativity of the structure must be assumed as the cause of the subject. Negativity understood in terms of moebian structures unites and separates subject and structure continuously.
