      <link>http://revues.mshparisnord.fr/chcp/index.php?id=524</link>
“The ‘Shack’ as a Locus of Resistance in the Yellow Vests Movement”During the French social movement called « les Gilets jaunes » (the Yellow vests), shacks were built on the outskirts of several roundabouts where the protests began, on November 17th, 2018. This article recounts the ethnographic and exploratory research, conducted by geographers and sociologists, on those precarious constructions. In order to question their social and spatial characteristics, we studied five of those shacks, across the national territory. The fieldwork took then place in Laon (Aisne), Carcassonne (Aude), Rennes (Ille-et-Vilaine), Molsheim (Bas-Rhin), and Pérignat-lès-Sarliève (Puy-de-Dôme) six months into the movement. We chose to describe those buildings as shacks (« baraquements »), as it refers, especially in French, to a roughly-built cabin for residential purposes, as well as to a military construction, thereby underlining its role as a locus of resistance. As we observed a multiplicity of sites, we came to understand several ways to define oneself as a Gilet jaune and to ensure community-building in the shacks. First, we examine how it was built collectively and secured against the weather and dismantlement by police force. Through negotiation and active participation of all members, the shacks gained the (uncertain) right to remain. Then, we identify the functions of the shacks and try to define them. The shack is an organising space for political action; civic experiments are carried out. It became a home for demonstrators, to ensure a daily reception point and to keep the mobilisation alive over time. Graphic creations, militant symbols soon covered the shacks and their whereabouts, ensuring their visibility, which contributed to the entrenchment of the shacks in the (material and political) landscapes, as landmarks embodying the fight for social justice. The Gilets jaunes altered the function of roundabouts by building political shacks on their outskirts. By doing so, they transformed a place one would merely pass by, into a space with strong political and cultural identity. They blended their protest and their subversive practices into the revival of local, ordinary yet warm-hearted socialisation customs. Thus, the shack takes root in the local, and makes local and national history, through the use of references and the bonding of a diverse community of people. For most of them, the shack grew into a refuge, where people who face the same problems, share a same anger would gather. They would therefore find empathy, understanding and strength there, to address their daily struggles, in this common sense of injustice. The complexity of the effects of this phenomenon on the individuals who took part in the Gilets jaunes movement, as well as on the French activism’s landscape lead us to suggest that the shack works as a rhizome for political engagement. Within a national network of shacks, the Gilets jaunes have discussed the construction of a new society. Depending on spatial and political opportunities, the shacks move and transform themselves, disappear and crop up again in other social movements. </description>
