<title>Le bolsonarisme, une anomalie historique ?
      <link>http://revues.mshparisnord.fr/chcp/index.php?id=1035</link>
“Bolsonarism, a Historical Anomaly? Progressive Prejudice Grappling with the Far-Right Vote”This paper focuses on the root causes accounting for the vote for Jair Bolsonaro, the far-right leader who —to the amazement of many commentators— became president of Brazil in 2018 but lost his re-election bid in 2022. The analysis is based on two fieldworks: one carried out by students from the Department of Anthropology of the University of Campinas, the other by the author of this article, which focused on a working-class neighbourhood in Rio de Janeiro. This paper relies on the following assumptions, in opposition to progressive beliefs: 1) Bolsonarism should not be reduced to a transitory phenomenon, deriving from a very particular economic and political situation, since it has its roots in Brazilian political history and culture; 2) the identification of Bolsonarism with fascism is a hindrance to understanding why people cast their ballot for this movement. Indeed, the analysis of Bolsonaro’s speeches and of his voters’ ideas suggests that Bolsonarism mobilizes certain democratic imaginary, which places freedom at the core of its values, assigns an ethnocultural significance to the notion of majority and considers state intervention as an existential threat. And the greatest paradox is this imaginary may very well inspire coups and authoritarian regimes for the sake of safeguarding democracy against its allegedly enemy: socialism. The paper concludes on the epistemological difficulty of approaching this political imaginary so contrary to the progressive beliefs shared by many anthropologists, for personal and professional reasons. </description>
